There are two coal-bearing sequences within the Gunnedah Basin, the Early Permian Bellata Group and the Late Permian Black Jack Group. Coal bearing strata found in the Boggabri Project area are assigned to the Early Permian Bellata Group.
Coal seams within the Boggabri Project area are generally from the Maules Creek Formation with only the occasional basal seam intersection being within the underlying Leard Formation. A total of 16 seams have been formally identified and correlated. Of these, 8 seams have been targeted for open cut operation.
Existing operations target the Merriown seam through to the Braymont seam with additional seams to be mined in the future. The targeted seams range in thickness from 0.9m to 4.9m and generally dip to the northeast at up to five degrees.
Raw coal quality statistics indicates that the main coal seams of interest at Boggabri are capable of producing a relatively low ash, high volatile, low sulphur thermal/PCI/Semi-Soft Coking Coal.
