The Muswellbrook mine operates as a truck and shovel multi seam mine. Overburden is removed by a combination of an electric face shovel and excavators loading overburden into dump trucks.
Coal is hauled out of pit by haul trucks to the ROM stockpile. ROM coal is washed on site and product coal is hauled by highway trucks to the Ravensworth Coal Terminal. It is then transported by rail to the Port of Newcastle.
Overburden is emplaced within the pit in the void created by earlier mining operations. When the emplacement reaches the final height, the spoil is reshaped to create a stable and erosion-resistant landform. Adequate drainage is installed, topsoil spread on the surface and then seeded with a mixture of grasses and trees.
The open cut mining operations involve mining through previous underground workings. These being Fleming, St Heliers, Muswellbrook and Lewis seams. Approximately 55% of the coal resource remains within the underground pillars.
