Open cut coal mining is currently conducted via hydraulic excavators in a strip mining configuration. Coal from the pit is loaded into rear dump trucks and transported to the ROM crusher pad. Coal is recovered from the ROM pad by front end loader and trammed to a crusher for sizing. Crushed coal is conveyed to a product bin where it is loaded into B-double trucks for transport to the rail loadout facility via a private 17 km haul road. The coal is conveyed to the train loadout bin and railed to the Port of Newcastle for export.
In 2008, 1.4 Million tonnes of coal was mined from the Bollol Creek to the Merriown seam within the Maules Creek formation. Open cut mining methods at Boggabri Coal allow the full recovery of all coal down to the Merriown seam. Coal from the open cut operation is currently mined from the Braymont, Bollol Creek, Jeralong and Merriown seams.
Rehabilitation is carried out in areas where mining operations are complete. Spoil is reshaped by dozers and topsoil is spread on the surface. The area is then seeded with native grasses and local trees planted as part of our reafforestation commitments.
Boggabri Coal is committed to the environment and all rehabilitation conforms to the Mining Operation Plan (MOP) and the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
